Short block engines

Short block engine packages usually include the engine block, crank, pistons and connecting rods, and it gets its name from its short list of components and short warranty. These are the basic components that are critical to a working engine. In some cases, short blocks can come with extras like camshafts and timing belts.

Long block engines

Long block engines get their name from the fact that they have a longer list of components. They contain the engine block, crank and pistons, just like the short block, but they also have a cylinder head, camshaft and valve train. In some cases, you’ll also get an oil pan and valve covers with your purchase.

Which engine should I choose?

Long block engines are generally best in situations where your vehicle needs a complete engine overhaul. You’ll get better reliability and performance from a long block vs. a short block.
